THE STORY

For this project I explored how 3D can make something as ordinary as “a person standing still” feel alive and almost touchable. Starting from a 3D scan, I built three different visual translations of the same figure: a clean mesh, a raw point cloud and a coloured point cloud. By placing them side by side in a dark, minimal environment, the focus stays on how each representation tells a slightly different story about the same human. It is less about a character with a backstory and more about how our tools shape the way we see and feel digital humans.

HOW I SHAPED THIS

I used Blender to clean up and sculpt the base mesh so the silhouette, folds in the clothing and small details like the watch and hair felt believable without becoming noisy. From there, I took the data into Spline and Three.js to experiment with how the model behaves in a browser context. In Spline I could quickly test compositions, lighting and camera angles to find a balanced three-quarter view. In Three.js I focused on performance and interaction: loading the point cloud efficiently, adjusting point density and size, and using subtle movement of camera and light to make the figure feel present without distracting animations.

CHALLENGES

The first challenge was technical. The original scan was too heavy for Spline, which meant that the scene quickly became unusable in the browser. I tried different optimisation techniques such as decimating the mesh and reducing point density until I found a version that still felt rich, but remained performant and smooth enough to interact with. The second challenge was more personal. I wanted the figure to be abstract and built out of points, but still recognisably me. If I pushed the abstraction too far, it became just a generic 3D person. By carefully tuning the density, colour and lighting, I looked for that sweet spot where I could still recognise my own posture and clothing, while the image stays experimental and slightly unreal. Together, these challenges show how I enjoy working right on the edge between technical constraints and a strong, personal visual concept.
